The structure of this High Plains supercell was phenomenal. The updraft was very symmetrical with quite a bit of separation from the precipitation core.  The tornado above was the first of two produced by the storm.

Above: Autumn colors are illuminated by the setting sun in a high mountain valley in the Uncompahgre National Forest of Ouray County, Colorado.  Mount Sneffels, center, is one of the most majestic peaks in the northern San Juan Mountains.

A last minute, two-day fall color drive took me to one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado.  As an added bonus, I was able to spend some quality time with my cousin.  The landscape and colors were incredible, and I hope to go again next year.

Above: A black bear cub peers down from his perch in a tree in the 2600 block of Alma Avenue on Pueblo’s south side Monday morning.  The cub was one of two that, along with their mother, were treed and captured by Colorado Division of Wildlife officers. The bears were then relocated near Westcliffe in Custer County.

Rain! Finally. Highly electrified, high based storms moved through town this evening bringing much needed moisture.  The parking garage at the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk provided a little bit of shelter and a great vantage point.

It’s hard to believe more than half the summer has past.  About three more weeks at the Chieftain, and then I’m heading back to Denver.  Heading back to pursue more education outside of journalism. The internship has been great so far with excellent assignments and a manageable workload.

Returning to my hometown as a photojournalist has been a wonderful and eye-opening experience.  One of the best parts of being a journalist is the opportunity to meet people from different walks of life, and to learn what they’re passionate about.  In the process, we see parts of our own community of which we were previously unaware, or gave little consideration to.  This summer, I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of great people doing interesting things.  It’s been so much fun, I can’t believe I’m being paid.

Above:  The last light of the day paints the backside of a severe thunderstorm as it moves east over rural Otero county on June 27, 2011.  The elevated storm prompted reports of hail to the size of ping pong balls in far southeastern Pueblo county.

I planned to stay home this evening after work.  Despite my optimism this morning for severe weather chances in the Pueblo area, it became apparent by midday that chances had greatly dwindled.  Dewpoints fell to the upper 30s and low 40s, so CAPE was minimal.  A few storms fired north of the Raton Mesa in Las Animas County, as well as north on the Palmer Divide, but those areas were not options today.

I had just about written the day off until I saw this cell go up south of Pueblo mid evening.  A quick glance at a surface map showed moisture had increased slightly; Pueblo was 83/51 with SE winds. It looked junkie on radar, but somewhat healthy out my window.  As it turned out, it was worth the drive out to Fowler.  And if I didn’t know better, I’d think I was shooting Velvia. Shot on a tripod @ f/22, 1/4 sec. for maximum depth-of-field.
